Charlottetown, PE – Mighty and Strong, with Ron Matheson driving for Patrick Morris, Charlottetown, won the Saturday night feature in 1:57.2 at the Charlottetown Driving Park Entertainment Centre.
Matheson, who also trains the horse, sent him right off the wings to establish control just past the opening quarter and held on to beat Whos Smiling Now owned by Wilfred Hughes and driver Jason Hughes for the win. Yankee Sun and Kenny Arsenault was third for the BM Stable, N.B.
Driver Walter Cheverie was in the winner’s circle for the MacPhail Clan pace aboard Woodmere Destiny. The two-year-old colt, who was charted in 2:02.1, is owned by David MacPhail and Roddy MacLean, Cornwall. Cheverie came back to win the Home Hardware Building Centre Stratford pace with Rebel Ryan for owner-trainer Kevin MacLean, Vernon Bridge. The winning mile was 2:00.3 over Edgewater RB and PH Super Dave.

Spud Island Classic Eliminations
Charlottetown, PE – Shooters Bay, a newcomer to the Maritimes owned by Adam Johnston, Truro, N.S., won the first heat of the Spud Island Classic, presented by the PEI Potato Board, Sunday in 1:57. Darren Crowe engineered the winning trip over a fast closing Princess Julia, Earl Smith, and Unfluffinbelievable with Marc Campbell.
Smith, who enjoyed a driving triple on the day, drove Whitesand Whisper to victory in the second heat of the Spud Island Classic for Hopedale Holdings Ltd, Charlottetown and trainer Alan MacDonald. The mare held off For The Luv Abunny with Brian MacPhee for the win in 1:58. Timeless Hanover trained by Ralph Frizzell was third.
